Installing Floodtide

The normal part

1. Open the downloaded disk image.
2. Drag Floodtide onto the Applications folder shown beside it.
3. Eject the disk image.

The extra step, and why it exists

This beta is not yet signed with an Apple Developer ID, so the first time you open it macOS will say Floodtide is damaged and can’t be opened. Nothing is damaged. That is the message macOS shows for any app it cannot trace to a paid developer account, and it will keep saying it until the app is signed and notarised.

Either of these gets you past it, once:

• Right click Floodtide in Applications and choose Open, then confirm. macOS remembers the choice.
• Or run this in Terminal, which removes the download quarantine flag:
  xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Floodtide.app

If you would rather not do either, wait for the signed release. Trust is the whole pitch of this app, so it would be strange to ask you to ignore your Mac’s warning without explaining exactly what it means.

Check you got the file we published

The SHA-256 of the current disk image is below. Compare it with shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/Floodtide-0.1.0.dmg.

First launch

Floodtide explains what it needs before it needs anything, then scans your Applications folders. The trial runs 14 days with everything unlocked; after that it keeps scanning for free and only installing locks. A licence is £19.99 once for three Macs.

Uninstalling

Drag Floodtide to the Trash. Its settings and update history live in ~/Library/Application Support/Floodtide, which you can delete too. Nothing is installed outside those two places.
